Introduction to jQuery for ASP.Net Developers

by ely October 01, 2009 15:17

On Friday, October 23rd, I will be giving a hands on lab featuring an introduction to jQuery for the ASP.Net web forms developer:

“JQuery is an open source JavaScript library that can be used to build rich, interactive, client side applications. Recently, Microsoft has announced that jQuery will be integrated into both ASP.NET web forms and ASP.NET MVC frameworks, which means the time is now to become familiar with jQuery and discover how this powerful library can help your applications. In this lab, Ely will go over how to build interactive apps using the jQuery, especially geared towards the ASP.NET Web Forms programmer.”

The labs are a part of the Denver Visual Studio.Net user group, and are held the Friday before the user group meeting (which is the fourth Monday of every month).  There is no registration required, so feel free to stop by and gets some hands on love with jQuery.

Upgraded to BlogEngine.Net 1.5

by ely June 16, 2009 15:46

I just updated the site to BlogEngine.Net to the new 1.5 version.  Upgrading was cake and I had no problems.  I also choose a new theme.  I was getting a bit tired of the dark grey, so maybe this theme will lighten things up a bit.

Windows 7 RC on Dell M1530

by ely May 01, 2009 03:51

I grabbed the fresh bits of the Windows 7 release candidate off of MSDN yesterday (after some adventures in downloading), and repaved my Windows 7 beta install on the Dell M1530 laptop.  Before, I had a duel boot setup between Vista and W7 beta, but rarely went into W7 unless it was to dink around or show it to somebody.  With the RC, however, I plan on making it my main OS on the laptop.

How did the install go?  Almost flawlessly.  From the time I popped in the DVD to being able to use the system was only around 30 minutes.  Somewhere in there, I repartitioned the drive and formatted it, but there was never any visual screen or wait time for the format.  I found this a bit odd and maybe I just missed it, or maybe Windows 7 has some type of ninja formatter that works in the background while doing other things.

Windows 7 successfully installed working drivers for both the wifi and video card, so I didn’t need to do any USB driver transfer to get on the Internet.  I grabbed all the Vista x64 drivers for all my stuff off of Dells website, and (except for the video drivers) they all worked great.  I was a little worried about the fingerprint reader and the webcam continuing to function, but they are both up and running.  I had to go to Nvidia’s site and see if they had drivers for the GeForce 8600M GT mobile card, an fortunately, they actually had Windows 7 beta drivers.  Once those were installed, I was good to go.

An hour later, I had Office2007, VS2008, and WoW (all the necessary apps in a repave for me :) installed, and so far, it has been running great.  This is the first OS since XP that I have really gotten excited about, so I am looking forward to trying it out.  The RC will time bomb on in June 2010, but I expect the RTM version will be out in the second half of this year, so everyone who tries out the RC will have plenty of time to upgrade to the final version before it shuts itself off.

Battlestar Galactica Finale Review

by ely March 21, 2009 04:10

Warning, the following post contains spoilers.  If you have not seen the finale for BSG yet, don’t read any further.  You have been warned!

Last night was the series finale of Battlestar Galactica.  I have watched this show since the mini series premiered, and in these days of DVRs, I normally stack up several episodes and watch them back to back.  BSG is the only show that I insist on watching every week.  It has been a tradition for my wife and I to watch them on Friday nights, and now there will be this void.

In one short, sweet word, the finale was epic.  The ending of Battlestar Galactica had the strongest columniation in any series I have watched to date.  Ideas that began to manifest in the first season finally saw fruition in the finale.  It is rare that a series can explain all its lose ends by end of its run, and while BSG wasn’t perfect, the writers, directors, and producers did an excellent job of trying to tell a complete story.

In reality, the finale was a three part episode, beginning with last weeks.  The flash backs to Caprica helped explain many of the characters motivations prior to the Cylon attack, and gave us glimpses of history we did not know existed.  I was specifically impressed with Baltar’s flashbacks.  James Callis’s performance in the scene with his father was superb.

They must have saved the entire season’s special effect budget for this final episode, as there was more eye candy in this episode than the past season combined.  It was cool to see them bring back some of the classic centurion models from the original series.

Every major character and even some of the minor characters have their story arcs wrapped up by the end of the episode.   The only character they left the audience wondering about was Starbuck, which was too bad for me because the one answer I really wanted out of the finale was what was Starbuck?  For weeks, the commercials have been touting the tag line, “You will know the truth”, and I felt like I was lied to.  Why did they make such a big deal about Starbuck’s dad coming back to her in visions and showing her the song if they were not going to expand on it?  Her final scene where she just simply disappears next to Lee left my jaw hanging.  My wife suggested that after Starbuck died in season three, “god” sent Starbuck back as an angel to guide his people in their time of need.  This is a fairly complete hypothesis that explains a lot, but it is not concrete.  I will be left wondering forever what Starbuck really was, and I am sure that was the writer’s intent.  That was very Sopranoish of them.

Battlestar Galactica has this effect on me that wakes me up in the middle of the night and makes me think about it for hours before I fall back asleep again.  For me, that is a mark of a great show.  I would like to congratulate the entire cast and crew of BSG on one of the greatest shows of all time, and one that I am proud to say I am a fan of.

Rocky Mountain Tech Tri-Fecta

by ely January 24, 2009 03:16

If you live (or are visiting) the Denver area come February 21st, come check out the Rocky Mountain Tech Tri-Fecta, an all day IT event focusing on .Net, Windows Server, and SQL Server.  There are going to be some big name speakers coming from out of town, including Scott Hanselman, and some great local speakers such as Kathleen Dollard, Joe Mayo, David Yack, Rob Bagby, and Joe Shirey.  This event is going to be great, and best of all it is free.  I have submitted a few talk abstracts to try to break into speaking, so hopefully I’ll be up there as well getting my feet wet with this esteemed panel of speakers.  For more information and to register, go to the website here.

New Year, blog, goals

by ely January 06, 2009 15:58

I've never been one for New Year’s resolutions.  I don't think they work.  Every year people make resolutions and usually stop following them within a few weeks.  However, I do believe in making goals, so I don't see any problem in making some goals for myself for 2009.  Here is a quick list of what I have planned:

Lose some weight:
I have ballooned up to 240 pounds.  Wow!  When I graduated high school a little over ten years ago, I weighted 140 pounds.  Working at a desk for ten years and having really poor eating habits has added a lot of stress to my frame.  I would like to get around 200 pounds over the next year.  I know having a goal of straight weight loss is not really a good goal, instead I would rather base it off of body fat percentages.  As soon as I get what my current body fat percent is, I'll have a better idea of what to set my goals for.

Get a MCPD certification:
I've been studying to take the 70-536 .Net Application Framework Fundamentals for a couple of months now, and will be taking the test in about a month.  In 2009, I want to take the next two exams to complete the whole certification.

Take nine college courses:
I've been going to Regis University for the past four years.  I am about half way through my junior year.  Taking nine courses in 2009 will get me real close to completing my computer science degree in 2010.

Blog more often:
I want to start taking this blog more seriously and write regularly.  My goal will be to post weekly, whether it is updates to my 2009 goals or my adventures in technology.
